Here John is writing because some were being mislead. You can see this looking back at verse 1 of this chapter. Today people are still being mislead. In the gospel of John 10:10 he tells us the ruler of darkness was stealing killing and destroying. He is still at work today. He wants to take your joy and peace away. The easiest way to do that is through those closet to you, the ones you love. Here in this chapter God tells us what love is and tests to determine true love.
God is Love
- He came to be our propitiation (did something for us we can not do for ourselfs)
- His love is perfected in us
- At first we may not be good at it
- We have to work at getting better
- No fear
- Reflects Gods love
- Demonstrated by loving others
